The emotion I chose was happiness and the colors I used to represent this emotion were orange, yellow, and blue. I chose them because I wanted to convey that happieness can be an very exciting thing that has lots of movement and energy but can also be something more constant and long lasting (that is where the blue comes into play).

By the end of part 1 my color story had eveolved from my wanting to show happiness as something that grows from inside you to something that may have multiple sources contributing to one overall feeling. I broke up my grid to give the feeling of unconfined movement as happiness is not restrained and also to show that there can be multiple sources of happiness that you are not seeing in this grid/image.

My language/type tries to complement the first story by fitting into the grid's white space and act as more of a compliment to happiness that to tell the same story. I wanted to give the viewer something different to look at while still keeping the focus on the first grid. ( I was thinking they would be displayed side by side and have the two posters work together to reinforce the original feeling and story of happiness). After class discussion I am going to try to continue the same story but offer my type poster as an additional source of happiness that you do not see in the original grid poster.

The grid played a huge role in both projects. The first project the grid is very visible and established. I was able to use the grid by breaking apart the outer boarder to show motion and give it a whimsical feel. In the type project I used the grid once more, this time not giving the viewer much of a grid feeling at all but to fill in the white space left in the first poster.

The effects the chosen typeface gave to my poster added to the whimsical feel of happiness. The e of the font is slanted to make it look like it is laughing. It is a nice thin font as well and I think the round geometric style appealing balanced look and feel.

This was the photo of the day on National Geographic's website. The grasshoppers details are a great natural design and flows seamlessly into the flower. Perfect camouflage.

Color and Figure/Ground

My understanding of the color orange when first starting this project was that it was a happy energetic color. I knew that it had the potential to be overwhelming but also when used more neutrally could create very appealing earth tones. My understanding of this color has evolved by using it as more of an accent color. I had originally thought of it as only a background to overwhelm or to be neutral. Using it as a accent can draw the eye to some specific important details, especially when combined with a deep purple blue or even against white. What I learned from this color combining project was that using colors that are similar in saturation can be useful when used in the right context. The vibration effect of the two colors I had previously thought would be something to avoid but now realize after seeing some class mates projects that it can create a powerful visual effect. Examples of this are orange and red, and yellow and white. The escalating complexity of color allowed me to explore using orange as more of an accent. I had enough other color to create the shape and could focus on the relationship and hierarchy of what I wanted viewed first.

Analogous Colors

a painting with Analogous primary colors.

Neutral Color

I found these posters for a Jalapeno eating contest on Communication Arts, I think what draws me to this poster series the most is the texture. I would like to know if they are printed on a textured paper or not.

This Ad campaign for a local internet supplier in South Africa has some really great neutral photography. Also found at Comm. Arts.

Tertiary Color

Here is my dresser. BlueGreen.

Complementary Colors

Here are some tomato and jalapenos that my girlfriend and I grew from seeds. We have probably about a 3X3 square of dirt in our parking lot that we turned into a garden. We're pretty pumped about it.

Primary Color

These old posters are a good examples of primary color usage. (The first poster is screaming Red Sox.) I think my favorite of the group is the yellow and blue, the yellow color draws my eye and the blue ribbon/boarder creates a nice contrast and makes the type nicely legible. I also really like the fact that the signs are in french.

Figure/Ground observation

I saw this logo while watching the news the other day and for the first time saw the figure/ground relationship. It was great, and totally distracted me form what I was watching.
